Even a Whisper?

Date: 05-June-2004

By F. S.

The footsteps have grown distant
And the hearts even more estranged
How many tales of despair must you hear?
To compel you to come to our aid?

If you cannot come, then at least raise your voices
Show the world what it means to have faith
This uniting bond of brotherhood between us
Should remain unbroken through space

Even if your words were spoken in a whisper
In the midst of silence they would indeed be loud
Those little whispered words of concern
Would bring light upon these darkened walls

They would drive away the isolation
And give us the strength to remain firm
They would bridge this chasm between the world and us
And wash away our grief ten-fold

Will you not help share our burdens?
Be our eyes to the world outside?
What causes you to withdraw your hands?
Have these hearts of yours become cold?

What causes the tongues to be silent?
Have the words become so few?
Or has the ink dried from neglect
Worn out emotions, insensible souls…

If you could see our state of humiliation
Your eyes would have drained of tears
What eyes could continue to smile
Having seen other eyes filled with grief?

If you could feel the hurt of families torn apart
Your hearts would have burst with an aching so deep
What hearts could remain unaffected and uncaring
Having seen other hearts wrought with pain?

Brandish your weapon of dua, O believer
Shield us with your prayers in the night
Pray that our chains are opened, our hands freed
And that we are united with our dear ones once again

Flourish the standards of justice up high
Raise your hands against the wrongs that have spread on this earth
Or at least speak O ummah, so that we may hear you
So that we may feel solace – that we are not alone.
